Take a Walk
If pre- and post-game entertainment important to you, Petco Park will not disappoint. In fact, it’s one of the best spots in the majors to do some exploring when the game’s not on.
Petco is right in downtown San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarter. It’s what the French Quarter would be like without the strip clubs. There’s block upon block of restaurants and bars to choose from, and revelers from all walks of life filling the sidewalks and sometimes street.
Not too long ago it was a part of town known mostly as the first stop for sailors on leave, with rough-as-can-be gin mills and other forms of entertainment that sailors on leave pursue. A restoration project in the late ‘80s has been a huge success and without it, Petco Park may not exist. Instead, you’d probably be reading about the Washington (D.C.) Padres.
Beyond the Gaslamp Quarter there are more than enough activities and sights to see in San Diego to easily fill a weekend or a whole week. You can visit Sea World and the world famous San Diego Zoo and its Wild Animal Park; sit on a patio in Old Town and sip on a giant margarita at one of its Mexican restaurants; hit one of the great beaches (Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach); head to the exclusive enclave of La Jolla or over the scenic bridge to Coronado, or south of the border to Tijuana, about 15 miles away.
