The Minnesota Twins are known as one of the “small-market” ballclubs that struggle to keep up financially with teams from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and the like. One of the strategies of small-market ballclubs is to have a strong minor league system that produces talented, young and cheap players for the big club … and then lose them to free-agency.
But one popular member of the franchise has managed to stay with the Twins longer than anyone… TC Bear, the mascot.
The Twins signed TC in 2000 and he became an instant fan-favorite. TC keeps the crowd entertained in between innings and before the game, when he is introduced and rides out on his Polaris 4-wheeler. TC keeps busy during games: he usually catches the ceremonial first pitch, helps lead fans in “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” helps the grounds crew change the bases before the sixth inning and shoots t-shirts to fans using an air gun.
TC is active off the field as well, joining the team on their Winter Caravan tour around Minnesota and helping with youth programs like Athletes Committed to Educating Students (ACES), and the Twins’ Kids Club.
But TC is perhaps best known for being able to hit. He is a three-time mascot home run derby champion. And every Saturday at the he challenges three people to a home run hitting contest…and he rarely loses. So if all else fails at least the Twins have a homer-hitting mascot.
